White Cane Week 2007 Proclamation

The Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) is pleased to announce that Mayor David Miller of Toronto has agreed to support the CCB, in the form of an official proclamation letter from the Office of the Mayor saluting White Cane Week 2007.

WHITE CANE WEEK 2005
February 6 - 12, 2005


WHEREAS, this is the 59th year in Canada that the first week of February has been recognized as a public awareness program;

WHEREAS, White Cane Week aims to create among Canadians a greater respect for the white cane as a symbol of independence, not dependence: and

WHEREAS, extending accessibility essential to enabling those who lack sight, but not vision, achieve a reasonable quality of life; and

WHEREAS, this campaign reflects the changing circumstances of the blind and visually impaired and their families; and

WHEREAS, White Cane Week is a program of the Canadian Council of the Blind, "the voice of the blind": and

WHEREAS, this campaign asks that barriers be removed and tools that increase accessibility be more widely utilised to enable blind and visually impaired Canadians lead full and meaningful lives;

THEREFORE, I, Bob Chiarelli, Mayor of the City of Ottawa, do hereby proclaim the week of February 6 - 12, 2005 as White Cane Week in the City of Ottawa.

WCW 2005 Manitoba Proclamation

On Monday, February 7TH, 2005, Norman A. Lyons, as Manitoba Division President, (pictured below standing beside Minister For Disabilities, The Honorable Christine Melnick who is signing the proclamation), along with Lucille Chase, Manitoba Division 1ST Vice - President and Public Relations Director, (Lady in dark clothing sitting), Marcel Renard, Manitoba Division 2ND Vice - President, Director of Membership / Chapter Liaison, and Moira Burton, (Lady in red), Advocacy Director, were present at The Manitoba Legislature for the signing of the Proclamation for White Cane Week. The Minister read the proclamation, signed off on it and presented it to be displayed in the Manitoba Division Office.

WHITE CANE WEEK

February 2 - 8, 2004

WHEREAS, the first week of February, 2004 is recognized as White Cane Week; and

WHEREAS, White Cane Week aims to remind all Canadians that the traditional cane is a symbol of independence - not dependence and that a lack of sight is not a lack of vision; and

WHEREAS, this is the 57th year that this public awareness program has taken place in Canada and reflects the changing situations of people who are blind and visually impaired; and

WHEREAS, White Cane Week is a program of the Canadian Council of the Blind which has acted as "the voice of the blind" for 60 years, and

WHEREAS, this campaign asks that service providers remove barriers that limit the fullness of life for our fellow blind and visually impaired citizens.

THEREFORE, I, Bob Chiarelli, Mayor of the City of Ottawa, do hereby proclaim the week of February 2 - 8, 2004 as White Cane Week.
