At minutes before 5pm on January 12th 2010 a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 struck the town of Leogane, approximately 25 km (16 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. In the next 10 days there were more than 50 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater. The Haitian authorities confirmed that the death toll exceeded 150,000 people as of 25 January.
In response to this overwhelming tragedy the Canadian Council of the Blind will raise funds under its Kitchens of the World cookbook program to help the unfortunate victims in Haiti. CCB spokesman Michael Potvin says "The purpose of the cookbook is to raise funds for all charities and non-profit organizations and since we are about to launch the cookbook in February, I can’t think of a better way and purpose than to assist those suffering from this horrific tragedy."
